Burma is pardoning more than 7,000 prisoners as it marks the 75th anniversary of Independence Day

Burma's military government said Thursday it will pardon more than 7,000 prisoners as it marks the 75th anniversary of Independence Day.

In November, Myanmar Radio and Television (MRTV) reported that Myanmar's State Executive Council had pardoned 5,774 prisoners, including former ministers, artists and four foreign nationals (citizens of the United States, Australia, Japan and the United Kingdom, among others). The decree of the State Administrative Council stipulates that the prisoners are granted amnesty for humanitarian reasons and on the basis of relations with other countries.
