Soptan volcano erupts in Indonesia, ash column reaches 7,500 meters

According to foreign media reports, Indonesian authorities said that Sulawesi’s northern Sulawesi volcano erupted twice on the morning of the 16th, with a column of ash as high as 7,500 meters.

According to reports, Indonesia’s National Disaster Response Agency spokesperson Sutopo said that after the volcano erupted, hot volcanic ash would fall, and the magma would also slide down the volcanic slope. Local residents should avoid activities near the volcano.

The Indonesian authorities reminded residents that magma might flow into the river near the volcano, and urged people to wear masks to prevent the fall of mountain ash.

Indonesia is located in the Pacific Ring of Fire, where volcanic eruptions and earthquakes occur from time to time. There are more than 120 active volcanoes in the country, and the Soptan volcano at 1,784 meters above sea level is one of them.
