The Philippines is phasing out jeepneys that are more than 15 years old
Jeepneys are responsible for half of the particulate matter suspended in the air in Manila and surrounding cities, according to a 2018 study. Jeepney drivers say that while getting rid of old jeepneys is good for the environment, the cost of starting a new one is so high that the average driver's income is so low that he has to take out a loan to buy a new one. While a traditional jeepney reportedly costs 150,000 to 250,000 pesos, a new eco-friendly vehicle can cost up to 2 million pesos. The average jeepney driver earns just 4,000 pesos a day.
