Cambodia and Thailand have deepened cooperation in water resources management
On the morning of May 14th, Minister of Water Resources and Meteorology of Cambodia, Thong Jeet Ta, led a senior delegation to Bangkok, the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society of Thailand, to attend the bilateral meeting on water resources management between Thailand and Cambodia together with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Economy and Society of Thailand, Pasir.
This meeting aims to enhance cross-border water resources management cooperation between the two countries, and promote sustainable governance, efficient utilization and fair distribution of water resources by improving institutional knowledge, technical capabilities and policy coordination.
The meeting conducted in-depth discussions on topics such as the bilateral cooperation framework, the overall plan for water resources management in Cambodia, mixed water resources management, water policies and legal norms, management of transboundary river basins (9C-9T), coordination of dam data and technical capacity building. Both sides reached a consensus and will sign a memorandum of understanding on the diversified management of cross-border water resources to further deepen cooperation.
Since 2018, Cambodia and Thailand, under the funding of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), have jointly implemented the 9C-9T joint project through the cooperation of the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) and the Mekong River Commission (MRC), focusing on promoting cross-border flood and drought disaster management. This project is coordinated by the regional Steering Committee, led by the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology of Cambodia (MOWRAM) and the National Water Resources Office of Thailand (ONWR), and implemented in collaboration by the cross-departmental working groups of the two countries, providing important support for regional water resources security.
