Wang Yi Meets with Brunei Minister of Foreign Affairs Ariwan

  

  

On June 7, 2021, State Councilor and Minister of Foreign Affairs Wang Yi met in Chongqing with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Brunei Ariwan, the rotating chairman of the ASEAN.


Wang Yi welcomed Erevan to China to attend the special foreign ministers’ meeting to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the establishment of dialogue relations between China and ASEAN. He appreciated Brunei, as the rotating chairman of ASEAN this year, for taking the initiative to play an important role in promoting the development of China-ASEAN relations and East Asian cooperation, and deepening regional resistance.    Wang Yi said that this year marks the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, and the two countries have launched a series of celebration activities. China is about to usher in the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China and embark on a new journey of building a modern socialist country in an all-round way. Neighboring countries including Brunei have always been China's good friends and partners on the road of development. In this important year, China is willing to work with Brunei to promote traditional friendship, deepen anti-epidemic cooperation, and jointly build the “Belt and Road” with high quality, and promote the healthy development of the Chinese-Chinese strategic partnership.


  Wang Yi said that the two countries overcame the impact of the epidemic last year. Both the domestic economy achieved positive growth and the bilateral trade volume rose sharply, demonstrating the tremendous resilience and complementary advantages of the pragmatic cooperation between the two countries. The flagship role of the "Guangxi-Brunei Economic Corridor" and the Hengyi Petrochemical Project should be further utilized to consolidate the "hub" status of Brunei's East Addition Zone. It is hoped that both parties will continue to deepen energy, local, 5G, e-commerce, artificial intelligence, big data applications, etc. Cooperation with each other to create a new growth point for pragmatic cooperation between the two countries.


  Ariwan congratulated the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China, congratulated China on the 50th anniversary of the restoration of its legal seat in the United Nations, and thanked China for its valuable support for Brunei's fight against the new crown pneumonia epidemic. Ariwan said that this year marks the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Brunei and China, and also the 30th anniversary of the establishment of dialogue relations between China and ASEAN. The development of China-ASEAN relations has made ASEAN countries more attractive and competitive. As the rotating chairman of ASEAN, Brunei is willing to continue to play an active role, strengthen communication and coordination with China, share China's development experience, and further enhance the quality and level of ASEAN-China cooperation.


   Ariwan introduced the recent visit to Myanmar. Wang Yi said that China’s and ASEAN’s positions and views on the Myanmar issue are generally consistent. We are willing to continue to cooperate with ASEAN to jointly promote the interests of the people in Myanmar, maintain calmness and restraint, and eliminate all types of violence. Under the constitution and legal framework, carry out political dialogue and continue to promote the democratic transformation process; jointly provide anti-epidemic assistance to Myanmar, curb the spread of the epidemic in Myanmar, and prevent the outbreak of the epidemic in Myanmar from getting out of control; jointly support the recovery of Myanmar's economy, improve people's livelihood, and ensure the rights and interests of the grassroots people; jointly urge All countries abide by the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and avoid unilateral sanctions and improper intervention.


   Ariwan expressed that ASEAN appreciates and supports China in continuing to play an important and constructive role on the Myanmar issue, and is willing to strengthen coordination and cooperation with China in the above-mentioned areas.
