Brunei has achieved self-sufficiency in poultry

The Borneo Gazette of Brunei reported on March 16 that Brunei's egg self-sufficiency rate has reached 103% and its chicken self-sufficiency rate has reached 100%. Meanwhile, the other four major foods continued to maintain an upward trend of self-sufficiency. Among them, the self-sufficiency rate of rice was 8%, that of beef was approximately 2.3%, that of tropical vegetables was about 72%, and that of fish was about 74%.

The Minister of Primary Resources and Tourism, Manaf, mentioned at the 21st Legislative Assembly that the increase in the self-sufficiency rate of six major commodities from 2022 to 2024 has made a significant contribution to Brunei's gross domestic product. The minister stated that the development of the food industry, namely agriculture, fishery and the agricultural food sector, requires a "whole-government" and "whole-society" approach. This involves close cooperation between the government and the private sector. As a strategic guide for promoting growth and increasing revenue in the food industry, the food industry roadmap has incorporated the above-mentioned concepts, mainly achieved through manufacturing, production, processing and value-added in the primary industry. Over the past three years, the average output of the food industry, including agriculture and fishery, has increased by approximately 41% cumulatively, rising from 525 million Brunei in 2017 to 742 million Brunei annually at present.
