Chinese enterprises to build a million-kilowatt photovoltaic project in Laos
On December 18, local time, the construction of the 1 million kilowatt photovoltaic project of the first phase of the China-CGN Northern Laos Connectivity Clean Energy Base officially began, which is the first large-scale photovoltaic project in Laos. More than 70 old and medium-sized enterprises will jointly participate in the construction of the Lancang-Mekong power cooperation benchmark project.
As a basic industry, electricity is an important field for building a China-Laos community with a shared future. In October 2023, China and Laos renewed and implemented the new five-year action plan for building a China-Laos community with a shared future, proposing to "deepen the strategic partnership of China-Laos electricity cooperation and accelerate the promotion of electricity connectivity."
It is reported that the CGN Northern Laos Connectivity Clean Energy Base project is an important support power supply project for China-Laos power interconnection. Located in Oudorxay, Luang Namthar and Phongsari provinces in northern Laos, it plans to build a large clean energy base of wind, light and biomass, which can complement each other, and help Laos transform its natural advantages into economic advantages through the innovative model of connectivity. China and Laos will increase the scale of electricity mutual assistance and realize resource sharing, market complementarity and industrial synergy between the two countries.
Among them, the first phase of the photovoltaic project installed capacity of 1 million kilowatts, located in the northern Laos Oudomxay County and Namo County, is the first large-scale photovoltaic power project in Laos. After completion, it is expected to generate 1.7 billion KWH of electricity annually, which can meet the annual electricity demand of about 10 million households.
It is worth noting that the clean electricity produced by the project will be transmitted to Yunnan through the China-Laos 500kV interconnection project to help Yunnan Province's energy transformation and power supply guarantee.
At present, Laos is at a critical stage of energy transformation and development. The construction of CGN's clean energy base for connectivity in Northern Laos will give full play to the technology, experience and manufacturing advantages of China's new energy industry to boost energy transformation and industrial upgrading in Laos.
According to statistics, the first phase of the project will drive more than 40 enterprises in China's new energy manufacturing, construction and construction industry chain, as well as more than 30 enterprises in Laos local construction units, machinery supply and raw material supply to participate in the construction, which will create thousands of jobs during the construction period, help Laos establish and improve the new energy industry chain, and drive local economic and social development.
In June 2022, the Nanta River Hydropower Station in Laos sent electricity to Yunnan, China, from the past one-way power supply to China-Laos two-way power supply, which is the first two-way power transmission in the 12 years since the China-Laos power network. The power is delivered by a 115-kilovolt line jointly invested by China and Laos. At the end of January this year, the Lao National Transmission Grid Company, jointly funded by China Southern Power Grid Company and Lao National Power Company, was put into operation, responsible for the investment, construction and operation of the country's 230 kV and above power grids and cross-border networking projects with neighboring countries.
In addition to the connectivity projects with neighboring countries, relying on China's new energy industry chain advantages, China's overseas energy investment is showing a new model and a new picture.
More than a month ago, the first photovoltaic project invested by Chinese enterprises in South Africa started construction. As the first private PPA (power purchase and Sale Agreement) self-provided power station project of Chinese enterprises in South Africa, China General Nuclear Power Group and Sinosteel Group created the "mining and electricity joint" model in the project. The project uses photovoltaic modules and inverters made in China, and the project purchasers, investors, EPC builders, financing subjects and main equipment suppliers are all from China, which drives the whole new energy industry chain to the sea. After the completion of the project, it will be operated independently by CGN to achieve integrated operation of investment, construction and operation.
