The President of Indonesia has called for a nationwide effort to address the problem of garbage

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto recently expressed his dissatisfaction with the long-standing garbage problem in the country and made clear instructions during the national coordination meeting, demanding that all levels of government and social forces take immediate action to carry out comprehensive environmental cleaning work.

On February 2nd, at the national coordination meeting held in Sentul, West Java Province, President Prabowo asked all sectors of society to "get involved personally" and promote a large-scale environmental cleaning campaign. He severely criticized some local government officials at the meeting, pointing out that the garbage problem in some areas had not been resolved for a long time and had negatively affected the country's image.

Prabowo emphasized that in coastal areas, especially international tourist destinations such as Bali, if garbage accumulation persists for a long time, it will seriously damage the image of Indonesia's tourism industry in the international community. He asked provincial governors and county magistrates to take immediate action and mobilize students from primary schools to universities to participate in collective environmental cleaning activities.

"Provincial governors, county magistrates, primary schools, junior high schools, and senior high schools are all under your management. What's the difficulty? Whether it's Friday or Saturday, have all schools gather at the beach. This is our beach, this is our home. Let's clean it up together," Prabowo said at the meeting.

In addition to the education system, Prabowo also issued direct instructions to the Indonesian National Armed Forces and the National Police. He clearly stated that if local governments respond slowly or fail to effectively organize actions, military and police forces should immediately take over the organization and execution of the cleaning actions.

"Is there anything wrong with collective labor? If the county governors and provincial governors cannot execute the orders, I will order the commanders of military districts and military divisions. I order you to lead the troops to carry out cleaning actions every day or regularly. The police should also organize collective labor," Prabowo further emphasized.

At the same time, Prabowo specifically requested that the national investment agency "Island Future Power" and the state-owned enterprise system play a role. He pointed out that the state-owned enterprise system has a large number of personnel and should become an important force for environmental improvement, and required all government departments and state agencies to keep their office areas clean before work starts.

"All ministers, various ministries, government agencies, before entering the office, at least spend half an hour cleaning the surrounding environment. Don't just 'prepare for work'; if necessary, the minister himself should also lead the way," he said.

Prabowo stated that this nationwide environmental cleanup campaign aims to improve the ecological environment through practical actions, maintain the country's image, and present Indonesia in the international community with a clean and orderly public environment, demonstrating its responsibility and dignity.

At present, the related actions have attracted widespread attention in Indonesia. The outside world generally believes that this move marks that the Indonesian government has released a stronger policy signal on environmental governance issues.
