Eu summit held
The two-day European Union summit kicked off in Brussels, Belgium on the 17th, focusing on the so-called response to Iran's military attack on Israel. At the summit, several EU countries called for tougher sanctions against Iran, and at the same time, the EU also called on Iran and Israel to exercise restraint and avoid any actions that could escalate the situation.
Bird: The EU summit was originally intended to focus on economic issues, but in the context of Iran's drone and missile attacks on Israel, especially in the case of differences among EU countries on the situation in the Middle East, how to jointly deal with the current tense situation in the Middle East became the concern discussed by EU leaders that day.
At the summit, several EU member states proposed expanding the bloc's existing sanctions against Iran, including more sanctions on Iran's drone and missile production. It is reported that the European Union has set up a sanctions system after the escalation of the Ukraine crisis in February 2022, prohibiting the export of parts that can be used to manufacture and produce drones to Iran.
At the same time, the EU foreign ministers also called on the relevant parties in Israel and Iran to exercise maximum restraint, avoid any action that may increase regional tensions, and urged Israel not to retaliate against Iran. Eu leaders said they were in contact with all sides to avoid escalating tensions in the region.
Iran is now subject to hundreds of Western sanctions. The British "Financial Times" said that while the Western countries are brewing new sanctions against Iran, they claim to seek to "cool down" regional tensions and claim to want to avoid an all-out regional conflict. Public opinion pointed out that the direct cause of Iran's military attack on Israel was Israel's attack on the Iranian embassy building in Syria, and the root cause of regional tension was the spillover of the Gaza conflict. The Western countries do not face up to the root of the problem, but try to achieve regional peace by sanctioning Iran, which fully reflects the double standard of their Middle East policy.
