On August 1, the United States took effect on China's electric vehicles and other tariffs

On May 22, local time, the Office of the United States Trade Representative announced that according to the instructions of the President of the United States, the office decided to maintain the "Section 301" tariffs imposed on China during the Trump administration, while significantly increasing tariffs on China's "targeted strategic products." Among them, the new import tariffs on a series of products such as electric vehicles and their batteries, semiconductors, steel and aluminum products took effect on August 1 this year.

According to the official website of the United States and Reuters, the Office of the United States Trade Representative issued a Federal Notice (hereinafter referred to as the "Notice"), providing the specific tariff numbers of about 387 product categories affected, as well as the new tax rates and implementation dates.

According to the office of the US Trade Representative, the new tariffs target "products in which China is dominant or in which the United States has recently made significant investments." The 30-day public comment period ends on June 28. In a separate notice, the USTR provided details on how companies can apply for exemptions from the machinery and equipment tariffs, while saying that any exemptions obtained will begin now (May 22) and end on May 31, 2025.

In response to the US decision to impose tariffs on China, a spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy in the United States said that the Chinese government will "take all necessary measures to defend its rights and interests" and that raising tariffs "will not only disrupt the normal economic and trade cooperation between China and the United States, but also significantly push up the cost of imported goods, bring more losses to US companies and consumers, and make US consumers pay more costs."
